Hi there 👋 I'm Vy!
I'm a sophomore at Cornell University majoring in Computer Science.

I'm Vy, a sophomore majoring in Computer Science at Cornell University.
As a computer science student, I care deeply about bringing technology closer to everyone in the world. That's also the reason why I'm interested in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Software Engineering. I want to learn more about other CS fields as well, like Machine Learning and Theory. I'm also an advocate for Women in Engineering and Computer Science. I hope that more and more women would have enough courage and determination to be successful in STEM.
On campus, I participate in two research groups focusing on HCI and Computer Networks as an Undergraduate Research Assistant: SciFi Lab and Cornell Tech. Starting in the Fall 2021, I will be an academic facilitator for Engineering General Chemsistry workshops (AEW). I'm also a social media committee for Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and Association of Computer Science Undergraduates (ACSU).
Besides technology, I love listening to music, watching criminal series, and exploring various restaurants during my freetime.

Overview

This is my first ever interactive personal website created using HTML/CSS and JavaScript.

What I've Learned

Because this is my first website development project, I started to learn everything from scratch. I picked up HTML/CSS and JavaScript, which is harder than I thought it would be. I found myself constantly trying to adjust every centimeter of my contents. Frontend definitely requires more patience and "a designer mind", which is very hard for me because I'm not at all an artist. But at the same time, it feels so nice to have a cute website for myself. I tried my best to make it looks pretty. Please don't hesitate to give me some feedbacks!

Research: Cornell Tech

A research project aims to detect and control misinformation on social media.

Overview

During the summer of 2021, I participated in a research project at Cornell Tech, focusing on HCI and Networks. As a research assistant, I helped test proposed calculations and algorithms aim to predict the spread of misinformation on socail media using Python as the main programming language.

What I've Learned

Back then, I learned Python in class but never got a chance to explore all the "power" of Python. For this project, I mainly used the networkx package of Python. I then realized that you can actually do a lot with Python. Not just programming, but also working with data and statistics.

Research: EmotionTrak (SciFi Lab)

A research project aims to detect humans' emotions on a daily basis through technology.

Overview

Starting in the spring of my freshman year, I participated in SciFi Lab, a research group at Cornell University focusing on HCI. I'm mainly working with the EmotionTrak team of the lab. We used various methods and technology to track and study humans' emotions and behaviors on a daily basis. As research asssistant, my main goal is to test all the wearable devices built by graduate students, develop mobile apps to assist with collecting groundtruth of each device, and help with user studies.

What I've Learned

The most important thing I've learned is how to be a good researcher. I work on my own most of the time and there is noone constantly remind me to complete my task. But, I slowly learn to manage my time and to be a more proactive undergraduate assistant. I read a lot of papers about human emotions, have a chance to test all the wearable devices built by our graduate students, and explore more advanced CS fields like Machine Learning and Computer Vision. In the future, I want to learn more about Machine Learning through the project and be even more involved with the lab.
